Tadalafil is prescribed for erectile dysfunction (impotence) for men. It is also prescribed as treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. This drug is marketed under the brand name cialis for erectile dysfunction and marketed under the brand name adcirca for pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Tadalafil does not increase sexual desire or cure impotence; however, it belongs to a class of medications known as phosphodiesterase inhibitors which increase blood flow to the penis when sexually stimulated in order to cause an erection.

Side effects

Common side effects associated with tadalafil include:  indigestion; heartburn; flushing (reddening) of the face, neck, or chest; headache; cough; diarrhea; stomach pain; back and muscle ache.  These common side effects should disappear within a few hours; however, it is possible the back and muscle ache will not disappear for a couple of days.

If during sexual activity you experience pain, numbness, or tingling in the jaw, neck, chest, or arms contact a medical professional immediately.

A possible side of effect of tadalafil is a painful erection or an erection that lasts over 4 hours. If you experience these side effects, contact a medical professional immediately.  A prolonged erection can cause nerve damage to the penis. Tadalafil can also cause a decrease of blood flow to the optic nerve and cause a sudden loss of vision. If this side effect occurs seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

Consuming alcoholic beverages while taking tadalafil may increase the side effects.

Dosage

Tadalafil comes in tablet form in doses of 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. The tablets are yellow in color and almond shaped. This pill can be taken either with or without food.  Tadalafil should be stored at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Tadalafil should not be taken more than one time during a 24 hour period.  Depending on how tadalafil is prescribed by a medical professional, this medication may be taken daily at a low dose.  If you are taking tadalafil on a regular schedule and you miss your scheduled dose, take it as soon as you remember.  However, if you remember the missed dose close to the time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule.  Do not double up your next dose if you missed a scheduled dose.

Over the counter

Tadalafil is a prescription only medication; it cannot be purchased over the counter. You can buy tadalafil at your local pharmacy or you can buy tadalafil online.

Precautions and interactions

Tadalafil should not be taken by anyone who is taking a nitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate for chest pain or heart problems.  Taking tadalafil with these drugs can cause a decrease in blood pressure that could cause fainting, heart attack, or stroke.

Tadalafil is not recommended for individuals that have heart disease, experienced a heart attack within the past 90 days, experienced a stroke or congestive heart failure within the past 6 months, have a liver or kidney disease, have sickle cell anemia, have a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia, or a stomach ulcer.

If your diet includes drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking tadalafil, talk with your doctor about possible interactions.
